Led by the Ministry of Education Property Team, the restoration and refurbishment of Christchurch Boys’ High School’s Main Block marked the final stage in the school’s post-earthquake redevelopment. The project delivered twentyfive new teaching spaces within a mix of refurbished and newly constructed areas, designed to align with the school’s philosophy of being “a modern school, with a rich past.”
As a Category 1 heritage-listed building, the Main Block required structural strengthening of its brick facade, roof replacement and careful refurbishment of original features. Internally, the spaces were upgraded to improve accessibility and functionality while preserving the building’s historic character.
A core challenge of this project was integrating the old with the new. Architects and builders were required to meet modern seismic and structural standards, exceptional internal acoustic performance, while preserving the heritage character of the building.
For the interior of the Main Hall, Angus Interiors was tasked with designing and installing aluminium partition systems. The arched hallways of the heritage building presented a particular technical challenge, requiring a customised approach to ensure a seamless fit between modern partitioning systems and the traditional architecture.
Potter Interior Systems worked closely with Angus Interiors to develop a tailored system that complemented the historic fabric of the building while meeting durability, functionality, and compliance needs. The resulting installation not only overcame the technical complexity but also received strong feedback from the client for its quality and visual appeal.
A number of CSR products were specified to deliver a balance of durability, sustainability, and performance across the refurbished spaces.
For the Main Hall, Angus Interiors selected Potters C45 Series Aluminium Partitions for their strength, durability, and cost-effectiveness. The system features a 45mm x 25mm glazing profile that accommodates 6mm–12.38mm glass and 38mm–50mm doors. Installed in powdercoat finishes with an antimicrobial coating suitable for educational environments, the partitions also provide compatibility with Potters DS doors and seismic bracing. With a long lifespan and 100% recyclability at end-of-life, the C45 Series offered both practical and sustainable benefits.
A combination of Protone plasterboard and AMF Alpha HD19 acoustic tiles with an SK edge was used for the internal walls and ceilings of the Main Hall. Protone was chosen for its ability to deliver exceptional acoustic control with a contemporary design. Available in flexible options, it provides design freedom while offering high levels of sound absorption
through a combination of perforation patterns and an acoustic fabric backing. This not only improves sound quality but also prevents dust from entering the room and conceals ceiling framework.
Protone’s patented Activ’Air® technology further enhances the learning environment by reducing formaldehyde and improving indoor air quality, critical for spaces that accommodate large numbers of students and
staff.
AMF Alpha HD19 acoustic tiles with an SK edge were selected for their durability and suitability for demanding learning environments. Specifically designed to meet DQLS requirements in New Zealand schools, the range is damage resistant, ensuring long-lasting performance. The elegant white acoustic fleece surface enhances aesthetics while also delivering excellent sound absorption, creating a high-quality acoustic environment for students and staff. Both products can also be easily installed onsite. All four edges of Protone Perforated Plasterboards are recessed to make flush jointing quicker and easier without the need for butt joints between full panels, and the AMF ceiling tiles also allow for quick onsite installation, reducing the man hours
needed to complete the fit-out. By combining customised installation techniques with sustainable, high-performing products, Potters worked
closely with the project team to deliver a solution that respected the heritage fabric of Christchurch Boys’ High School while providing the durability, safety, and functionality required for modern learning spaces.
