Led by the Ministry of Education Property Team, this project successfully blended heritage preservation with modern educational needs, creating a learning environment that reflects both tradition and innovation.
Background
Led by the Ministry of Education Property Team, the restoration and refurbishment of Christchurch Boys’ High School’s Main Block marked the final stage in the school’s post-earthquake redevelopment. The project delivered twentyfive new teaching spaces within a mix of refurbished and newly constructed areas, designed to align with the school’s philosophy of being “a modern school, with a rich past.”
As a Category 1 heritage-listed building, the Main Block required structural strengthening of its brick facade, roof replacement and careful refurbishment of original features. Internally, the spaces were upgraded to improve accessibility and functionality while preserving the building’s historic character.
